The tendencies I have noticed in U.S. Icebreaker specs have been:

1. Tonnage, power, and hull-form for Ice Breaking

2. Multi-mission capability supporting MERSHIP escort across ice, cargo/resupply capability, support for National Science Foundation tasking.

3. Ability to access Arctic/Antarctic Regions and break ice on arrival

4. The USN added ‘Command Ship’ to our Heavies at least (PSC) so a MARDET may be present and they need an Armory

I am sure there are others, but these have been the items I have noticed.

I really like the article. It seems to me that the Polar Security Cutter is going to be a BEAST and be able to handle anything including pressure-ridge ice. The Arctic Security Cutter would seem to be a smaller unit but still be able to handle HEALY support operations. If the Coast Guard does what they have been hinting at . . . and that is to use one in the GLAKES then it will be limited in beam and draft so it can get through the locks.

IMHO all ocean going naval vessels regardless of service should be able to employ a medium helicopter (flight deck & hangar), and be able to receive a heavy (70,000lbs) on the flight deck.

Just my 2ȼ.
